From Sat 16th Jun 2012 Until Sun 9th Sep 2012 10:00am until 5:00pm
Teddy Bear Story explores the history of the teddy bear from the first designs based on real animals to modern character and designer bears.
The exhibition will feature bears from the unrivalled collections of the V&A Museum of Childhood including those from picture books, film and television, and even teddy bears with their own personal stories to tell.
There are Stieff bears from the Edwardian period, British and German bears from the 1920s to the 1960s, children’s favourite characters including Paddington, Sooty and the Care Bears, plus bears from around the world.
Also on display is the Teddy Bear Theatre, which features over 50 Stieff bears and animals in a large display area shaped like Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. It was once a major attraction in London department store Harrods.
Hartlepool is the first town in the UK to host this unusual touring exhibition which is sure to fascinate everyone from the youngest teddy fan to serious bear collectors – or arctophiles, as they are known.
There is also a ‘teddy bear’s picnic’ area at the Museum, where children can play within sight of the bears, plus there will be a host of teddy-themed craft activities for youngsters over the summer – please contact the Museum on 01429 860077 for details.
