Then & Now
Hartlepool represents a rich mix of the very old and the very new. Its historic beginnings can be traced back to the discovery of an iron-age settlement at Catcote Village, although a visit to the Headland provides a more enriching experience. Known locally as 'Old' Hartlepool, the Headland represents the seat of Hartlepool's Christian Heritage with the mighty St Hilda's Church standing preserved and proud. If you are new to Hartlepool you're guaranteed to feel both welcomed and impressed - if you knew Hartlepool several years ago you're bound to be blown-away by its transformation!
A whole series of public and private sector investment has seen Hartlepool change beyond recognition in the last 20 years. The most staggering and impressive transformation is the Marina area. The former South Docks area is now the jewel in Hartlepool's crown affording a wealth of activities for visitors and locals alike. Hartlepool's renaissance as a vibrant town with lots to offer travellers from near or far has been acknowledged. The whole of Hartlepool is proud and excited about hosting The Tall Ships Races 2010 in the summer! Between August 7 - 10 Hartlepool will be the destination port for this prestigious international competition and is preparing to welcome a fleet of up to 100 impressive Tall Ships supported by up to 1 million visitors! This high profile event will certainly help to showcase Hartlepool and its many attractions.
