Buttonhooks have been around from at least 1550. The earliest reference to a buttonhook is found in Randle Cotgrave’s English/French Dictionary of 1611: “Boutonneur: an instrument wherewith buttons are pulled through their o’er straight holes.” This definition has never been bettered.
Until the 1880’s when ladies began to wear button boots, most of the buttonhooks before then were very masculine, as these would have been used by the Huntin’ Shootin’ and Fishin’ men and the military. They would have been used on gaiters, riding boots and buff jerkins.
With the demise of armour, soldiers turned to buff coats made of Ox hide to ward off blows, the buff hide being extremely tough and difficult to button.
This exhibition covers several periods of buttonhook history from 1700 to the present day.

‘Are You Experienced?’ were formed over 11 years ago and in that time they have become widely regarded as just about the best Jimi Hendrix tribute show you will see.
Guitarist John Campbell bears more than just a passing resemblance to Hendrix and is widely considered to be unsurpassed by anyone except Jimi himself. When he plays his strat behind his head and with his teeth, it brings a smile to the face of even the most finicky Hendrix fan. In fact John was featured strongly in the programme ‘Arena’ which was broadcast in October 2007 on BBC TV.
Yes, there was and always will be only one, Jimi Hendrix, but the legend lives on………..

In his flat cap and old gansey, Bobby Thompson’s woodbine smoking Little Waster alter ego became a folk hero across the North East. Yet this hid a man troubled by drink, gambling debts and the tax man. It’s 20 years since Bobby died, so don’t miss the return of this touching, heartfelt and very funny celebration of the life and work of this comic legend.
"from his success in the 50s and hard times of the 60s, to his climb back to the top in the 1970s"..... this is a must for all of those who loved little Bobby.
Performed by Pete Peverley using all of Bobby’s original costumes.
